The double bass (contrabass) as a solo instrument isn't for everyone. Some people love it, and some people absolutely can't stand it. Gary Karr's style of playing also isn't for everyone. To quote one critique of Gary Karr's playing, they didn't like Gary's "wide wobbly vibrato, portamento, and general "come to mama" musicality" whatever that means. Also, the double bass is a very different instrument than the cello. Yes, it can play in the same register as a cello but that doesn't necessarily mean it sounds like a cello. The double bass has a very different timbre than a cello that some people may not find all that pleasing, and may make some cello suite purists cringe when hearing such a large, unweidly instrument attempting to play these masterpieces. Listen to this and the other cello suites uploaded on this channel with an open mind, please.
