Rachel Zegler sings eight songs as Lucy Gray Baird on The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' official soundtrack, including 'Pure as the Driven Snow,' 'Nothing You Can Take From Me' and the Hunger Games franchise's iconic 'The Hanging Tree.' And if you're wondering if that's her singing them all, the answer is yes. Rachel Zegler sang nearly every single take live.
It's common for actors to pre-record their vocals and then sing softly, lip-sync, or dub them in the final edit.
Rachel Zegler, on the other hand, sang live while the cameras were rolling. As a result, the songs that we see Lucy Gray perform in the film all feature Rachel's live vocals.
Gushing about Rachel's live vocals, director Francis Lawrence said: "What was amazing is that she sang live every day. Not only could she do the pre-record, in-studio versions of these songs," he explained, "but we also knew that once we had her on set, Rachel really could do it."
Watching Zegler sing live on set, producer Nina Jacobson "would get chills," she recalled in the clip.
"Especially because she mostly chose to sing live. Which is really rare — usually [actors] lay down tracks, and then they lip-sync or maybe sing softly along, but they don't bring it every time because that would be exhausting. She brought it every time!"
Producer Nina Jacobson added, "I've never ever seen somebody do it – every take, live."
