This film is part of a collection of motion picture films that John Van Antwerp MacMurray shot during the time he served as American Minister to China (1925-1929).
The film covers the departure of American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews and his excavation team from Kalgan (Zhangjiakou), the gateway to Mongolia, where Andrews led a series of expeditions in the Gobi Desert. MacMurray had secured an escort of 50 Chinese cavalry men to accompany the crew of 37 people, eight cars and 150 camels, leaving Kalgan on April 16, 1928 (4:53).
