This opening event is the first instalment in a six-part multidisciplinary series. It provides context for the series by offering an 'intellectual history' of resilience. What do we really mean when we talk about it? How do our initial encounters with the concept change what it means to us? How do different encounters inform our efforts to enact it? The lecture delves deeper into multiple meanings (or polysemy) of resilience to show, first, how each approach creates unique challenges for scientists, specialists, policy makers and citizens alike, and second, that our efforts to build resilience has made it an important institution affecting the character and experience of democracy.
We hear from our speaker Dr Peter Rogers, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Macquarie University, Australia, and our respondent Deirdre Robertson, Senior Research Officer in the Behavioural Research Unit at the Economic and Social Research Institute.
