Fiddlin’ John Carson recorded these songs in 1923 and `24. He’s considered a pioneer of `old time music,’ though there’s more than a hint of the music hall (and vaudeville) in these and other songs he recorded. Twenty-some years ago I learned them from the Document reissues of Carson, cobbled together arrangements and then coupled them as a medley. I hadn’t played them for years, but recently stumbled onto a recording I made of several Carson songs back in 2003. This afternoon I decided to make revisiting (and relearning) these a project. As you’ll hear it’s a work in progress (`Turkey’ especially), but Carson’s spirit always makes me smile. Hopefully there’s a hint of it here. (Guitar by Slingerland.)
