In this episode of Adventures Into History, I’m joined by The Other Robert as we follow a dirt road deep into the back country of Georgia—unsure if we’re in Troup or Meriwether County. What we find hidden in the woods is a small plantation cemetery, identified on tax maps as the Hightower Cemetery.
The most remarkable feature is a massive fieldstone false tomb or cairn, built in the center of the cemetery.
Though small in size, cemeteries like Hightower hold enormous historical value. They are pieces of rural Georgia’s plantation past, resting places of families whose names are fading from memory. This video continues my mission of documenting these lost sites before they vanish completely.
