Cut Masonite Painting Panels with a Utility Knife...So Easy!

My earlier video on this great way of cutting painting panels sucked! This one sucks too but it's way better! I now have the phone on a tripod so you get a wider view and can more easily see how all parts of the procedure are going.

I wish I knew about this easy way of cutting masonite years ago!

I used to cut my masonite (hardboard) panels on a table saw, but this way is so much easier and more accurate. It may not be for everyone but if an old fart like me can do it so easily I bet you can too.

A big word of CAUTION. This can be very dangerous so keep the blades sharp, and angle the knife just a touch away from you when you have it against the yardstick edge. If you are uncertain at the start, apply very little pressure at each pass. You certainly don't have to press as hard as I am in this video. It will work fine with less pressure, but just be prepared to make more passes with the knife. Do this procedure CAREFULLY. It is dangerous and you don't want to go to the emergency room with a very nasty cut!

You'll notice I'm working on the floor and this is on purpose because your upper body strength is brought into play...it makes the whole procedure easier and more comfortable to carry out.

All the masonite panels I cut are small, 8 x 8 inches, or 8 x 10 inches, or 9 x 12 inches. If you go larger with masonite panels, especially with the very thin material I'm using here, there will be some warping when you gesso both sides. But you can learn to cradle your larger masonite panels and that will solve the problem......it's really easy doing that too!

And by the way, you become a better painter when you prepare your own materials, so these basic skills are worth mastering.
