26 Miles Offshore – Taking on Water with Kids Onboard!
What was supposed to be a great offshore trip turned into a serious situation fast. We were 26 miles out when our port motor started acting up—and that’s when I noticed water filling the bilge… quickly.
One bilge pump was barely working, the other wasn’t working at all. Instead of pumping out a gallon per second like I should’ve been, I was moving barely a coffee cup of water at a time.
With five kids onboard, I called a friend who’s the Command Master Chief at USCG Station Pensacola. Within moments, the Coast Guard was on their way, arriving in under 30 minutes. We’re still working to find the source of the leak, but one thing is certain—I’m beyond grateful for the United States Coast Guard and the work they do.
