The head of the Electoral Commission says Labour’s plan to delay local elections isn’t legitimate.
Vijay Rangarajan, the commission’s chief executive, said the Government’s reason for postponing votes in 63 council areas doesn’t count as a “legitimate reason”.
Ministers say they’re considering delays as part of major plans to reorganise local government. Critics say that’s an attempt to undermine democracy.
Of the 63 councils affected: 26 are Labour-run, 12 Conservative, 10 Liberal Democrat. One is run by independents, and 14 have no overall control.
Nigel Farage said the delays are meant to stop Reform UK winning next May and to protect Labour from embarrassment. A recent YouGov voting-intention poll puts Reform on 28%, Labour on 18%, and Conservatives on 17%.
