The Winter Olympics were held in Sapporo, Japan in 1972...I'm assuming the timing of this special edition car was celebrating that, and as noted, they celebrated the annual cherry blossom festival in Washington D.C. Special edition cars were a useful tool in boosting the bottom line for car manufacturers. Some, like this, only involved special paint schemes and stripe, and a custom interior. Others required quite a bit more!
