Mother's Day Coaster | DIY Macrame

Looking for a beautiful handmade gift idea this Mother’s Day? Then you’ll love our hemp mug coasters! Not only do they look very pretty, but they are also super functional. This is a beginner friendly pattern, and you can customize the size to fit your favorite mug, and choose your favorite colors too! We made this with our 100% eco-friendly hemp cord! Instructions:
1. Measure and cut 16 48lb. hemp cords 4 feet long.
Note: We cut 4 cords in Dusty Pink and the remaining cords in Natural

2. Fold each cord evenly in half and attach them to a dowel rod with a lark’s head knot
Note: Make sure you attach your ropes to something you are able to slide the finished project off of.

3. Using for cords at a time, tie one full row of 8 square knots.

4. Move down a row and tie 7 alternating square knots.

5. Keep repeating these rows of square knots until your coaster is the desired length.
Note: We tied 17 rows of square knots

6. Once you are finished with the square knots, slide your coaster off the dowel rod.

7. Pull each lark’s head knot up; you should see the loop. Take your scissors and cut right down the middle of those loops.

8. Trim your fringe to the desired length.
Note: We used the thickness of a ruler to guide how long our fringe was.

9. You can leave your ends as is for a more rustic finish. Alternatively, you can bundle your ends together and either tie them with overhand knots or gathering knots for a more neat finish.
Note: If ending your ropes with bundles of knots, do this before trimming the ends.
