A playthrough of DTMC's 1994 platforming game for the Super Nintendo, Lester the Unlikely.
What an apt name this game has!
Lester the Unlikely has one of the stranger setups of all the SNES games I've played. You play as the nerd offie Lester, who falls asleep reading a comic book while, for whatever reason, sitting among some cargo to be loaded on a ship. Apparently mistaken as cargo, Lester is inadvertently loaded onto the ship and inadvertently becomes a stowaway. And if that wasn't a big enough inconvenience in his day, pirates then show up and sink the ship, and Lester eventually finds himself washed up on the shore of a tropical island, looking for a way back home.
As unconventional as the the setup is, you might expect something really off-the-wall for gameplay, but at its heart, Lester the Unlikely is a Prince of Persia-style platformer. Like Nosferatu, Blackthorne, and Another World, the game revolves mostly around navigating environments and solving puzzles with super-deliberate character movements and animations. You can climb and lower yourself from ledges, find and use items, and even occasionally fight. The level layouts are pretty simple and puzzles are typically easy, but the game plays smoothly and is generally pretty fun. The graphics are nicely detailed and animated, and the soundtrack is really nicely done.
But what I liked the most about the game was its odd presentation. Lester is truly as uncharismatic a hero as you're every likely to find in a game. He has a painfully cringey walk that makes him look like he's crotch thrusting whenever he moves, he runs away screaming when he comes across an unexpected obstacle (like a turtle...?), and he attacks his enemies by wildly flailing his arms and legs while trying to protect himself. It's absolutely hysterical.
It's no AAA-title, but Lester the Unlikely is a surprisingly likable and endearing game - quite an achievement considering how unlikable Lester himself actually is.
