The contractions were coming every three minutes now, each one tearing through Elena Martinez's body like fire. She gripped the hospital bed's metal railing with white knuckles, her breath coming in short, desperate gasps as the contraction peaked and slowly, agonizingly, released its grip.
"You're doing great, Mrs. Castellano," the nurse said, checking the fetal monitor. "Seven centimeters dilated. Won't be much longer now."
Elena nodded, unable to speak, her dark hair plastered to her forehead with sweat. The private suite at Mercy General Hospital was beautiful—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Seattle, a leather sofa where the father could sleep, soft lighting designed to create a calm atmosphere for bringing new life into the world.
But there was no father on that sofa. No husband holding her hand. No one except Elena and the rotating nursing staff who looked at her with thinly veiled pity every time they entered the room.
Another contraction hit, and Elena cried out despite herself. Nine months of pregnancy, forty-two hours of early labor at home, and now six hours of active labor in the hospital. Her body was screaming for relief, for the epidural she'd refused because she wanted to feel everything, wanted to be present for every moment of her daughter's arrival.
