Update there is a new game store that has been built in the old PNC Bank building! it is very cool to check out!!
PNC Bank has closed the doors to its New Kensington branch on Feb. 9th 2007.
Pat McMahon, PNC spokesman, said the decision was made because the branch "may not be (operating) to its fullest potential."
PNC periodically reviews its branches, McMahon said, to determine if they are "meeting customer needs and operating efficiently."
Mayor Frank Link said his understanding of the situation is that not enough customers are using the bank to justify keeping it open.
The branch sits at the corner of Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue, the heart of the downtown business district.
Link said that PNC notified the city by letter of its intentions.
McMahon said PNC sent a letter to each branch customer announcing the close. The bank, he said, was required to give customers notice 90 days prior to the closing.
It was unclear how many customers the branch has, although McMahon said the branch is among the smaller ones in the PNC system with one part-time and three full-time employees.
Branch accounts will be transferred to the bank's Lower Burrell location in Hillcrest Plaza which is currently closed too. McMahon said customers can request to have their accounts transferred to another branch.
PNC is doing more growing than shrinking, McMahon said. PNC has opened five new branches in the Pittsburgh area within the past year, he said, the branch at Pittsburgh Mills among them.
The New Kensington branch is the only one in the region set to close, McMahon said. PNC closed a branch in East Liberty within the past year but opened a new one and the same general area, he said.
Link said there are still other banking options in the downtown section of the city. Citizens and Parkvale banks have branches along Fifth Avenue, not far from PNC.
"I still think we'll be OK," Link said. "There have been too many successes in the city recently to let this hold us down."
Link said the recent groundbreaking for a senior-citizens apartment complex along Ridge Avenue and the announcement that Westmoreland County Community College will build a campus along Fifth Avenue are two of the recent successes.
"What we need to do now is concentrate on filling that corner location," the mayor said about the PNC branch.
McMahon said PNC owns the building, 890 Fifth Ave., and welcomes public input on what should be done with it.
PNC Bank is the flagship subsidiary of PNC Financial Services Group, which has assets of more than $98 billion as of November 19th 2006 according to a company profile.
