Chrisman talks about the fascinating history of perfumes and why the late Victorian era was a turning point for fragrance. Scent is the least tangible of our senses, yet it is uniquely tied to memory. Sarah debunks the misconception about perfumes being used to disguise bad smells (actually, the societies most closely associated with perfume industries are also equally well known for their elaborate baths). Victorian advances in chemical science led to the first synthetic fragrances and made perfume cheaply accessible for the masses; scents like violet, which previously had been prohibitively expensive luxuries, became available to everyone. The advent of synthetic fragrances also opened the door to the invention of completely fanciful perfumes that evoked an imagined scent rather than mimicking a fragrance that already existed: this brought the world things like perfumes that smelled like the imagined spirit of a fantasy fern. Sarah also explains how Victorian con artists used patchouli to cover up the smell of chemicals used to do special effects in seances.
