You ever thought of listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas album that has been released since December 1965 and then you watch the special and the tracks are kind of different than the TV special. The most notable example of this is the Christmas Time Is Here song, because the song from the album and the special sounds the same but not quite the same. Now it could just be because the song is in better quality than the special but if you hear closely to the vocals and the music they sound kind of different from each versions. According to the Peanuts wiki the vocal take that was used in the TV Version of the special is currently unknown even in the new 2022 deluxe edition of the album the vocal take that was used in the TV Version was not included only the instrumental take surfaced on the album while the original vocal take from the TV Version is no where available online besides in the special itself. The vocal take used for the TV Version also differentiates from the album version by concluding with “Christmas Time” repeated several times after the last verse - a snippet of which could be heard in the original Coca-Cola sponsor shot. While the rest of the songs and music from A Charlie Brown Christmas has been officially released to the public some takes that were used in the TV Version hasn’t surfaced online not only Christmas Time Is Here but the Jingle Bells Toy Piano version that Schroeder plays, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing take that was also used in the TV Version. The reason why the toy piano take is unknown because not only there’s no information about it but it’s not featured on the 1965 album. However in the deluxe edition of the 2022 album there is an alternate take of the Jingle Bells Toy Piano version but it’s played differently than how it was in the TV Version. It also features the full unedited recordings of all the Jingle Bells Piano versions. Now about Hark! The Herald Angels Sing according to the Peanuts wiki the take that ended up being used in the television special differentiates slightly from the take used on the album. This can be best noted by the timing of the vocals and the scope of the background organ. The special was later edited to remove the Coca-Cola sponsor references which resulted in the song fading out early rather than concluding on screen. So unlike Christmas Time Is Here it almost sounds identical to the TV Version but the music is a little different and the peanuts wiki claims the take used is unknown. So I made a comparison of differences between each versions of the specials, albums and other media. Which includes the 1966 re-edit, the original 1965 Print, the 1965 album, a restoration of Christmas Time Is Here by YouTuber spetragl, and the alternate take of Jingle Bells that was sourced from the 2022 deluxe edition. While it seems like nearly everything from A Charlie Brown Christmas has been archived including the Original 1965 Print that was found in 2018 and the recent 2022 Album that features unreleased media from the production of the special, these takes of these three songs that was played in the actual special has not surfaced anywhere online even other iconic Peanuts specials music like It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving original recordings has been 100% archived but A Charlie Brown Christmas original recordings has more like 97% archived which could mean the original takes from the special were either lost, destroyed, or were given out to someone like Vince Guaraldi who was the composer of the special, so the whereabouts of them are really unknown. Only time will tell if the original takes of Christmas Time Is Here, Jingle Bells Toy Piano version, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing will ever be seen in the light of day again, we’ll just have to see what the future holds.
Special thanks to archive.org users, Titan91 for the 1966 Re-Edit Apple TV rip and Donovan Charles for the 1965 print used in this video.
