Street Debate in Mombasa: Why do young people become radicalized? Is it because of poverty or Islamic religion? DW’s 77 Percent reporter Edith Kimani brought together police, Alfred Sigo, Elected Youth Representative, Abdi Daib, Security expert, Evans Achoki, Mombasa County Commissioner, Ustadhi Mahamoud Mahamoud, Council of Imams, Mombasa and young people in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa to talk about the issue. Among the reasons that make many young people turn to Islamic extremism are poverty and unemployment. Radicalization is on the rise not only in Kenya, but also in Nigeria and Mali. Many disgruntled young people join radical groups as they feel frustrated and without hope for the future.
