For December, we bring you back to the dawn of the Belle Époque. This utterly delightful and compelling trio expresses the graceful voice of youth and joy. Although it is only rarely performed, its transparency and charm are a gateway into deep order and profound depth of expression. Written around 1863, the Piano Trio No. 1 is one of Saint-Saëns’ earliest chamber works, but it shows his trademark style fully in place: elegant, tuneful, and supremely confident in its craftsmanship. He conceived this piece as a young man on holiday in the Pyrenees and incorporated elements of the local folk music. Can you hear the sound of the hurdy-gurdy in movements two and four?
