The trickiest part of threading my sewing machine is remembering how the thread passes through the "thread clamp plate." This plate tightly clamps the thread for each stitch, and threading it properly is vital for tight, even stitches.
"Goldie", my antique stitching machine, was made in the early 1900s by The British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd. ("BUSM") in Leicester, England. This machine was imported into Canada by the John O'Flaherty Company in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The 1911 catalog for BUSM shows a wide variety of machines that would be useful in a harness, shoe, or saddlemaking shop. My machine is described in this catalog as a "No. 6 Saddlers' and Harness Makers' Sewing Machine. The machine is nicknamed a "Pearson" or "HM6" stitcher.
