Ivona Kaminska Plays J.S. Bach's Duetto No,1 in E minor, BWV 802
Notes from the performer:
Duetto No. 1 in E Minor, BWV 802, first published in 1839 as part of Clavier-Übung III, represents a form similar to Bach's Two-Part Inventions, yet is much more complex and chromatic. The piece exemplifies the height of Bach's polyphonic writing, featuring invertible counterpoint (where the right and left hands exchange identical musical ideas), extensive imitation, and sections resembling canon. While the Two-Part Inventions were intended for more beginner-level students, Duetto No. 1 serves as a more advanced counterpart, akin to a Two-Part Invention for seasoned musicians.
Though typically performed on the organ, this work also translates well to the piano. The meter of 3/8 suggests a lively tempo; however, it must be adjusted to prioritize clarity and transparency. The numerous large leaps call for a certain separation between notes, while the chromatic passages require a more delicate, controlled touch compared to the usual playing style.
