This video explains Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration & Nanofiltration & pore size of related membrane used in the water filtration process. These membranes are placed inside the water purification systems available in the market manufactured by various companies.
Microfiltration (MF) is a pressure-driven separation process, which is widely used in concentrating, purifying, or separating macromolecules, colloids, and suspended particles from solution.
MF membranes typically have nominal pore sizes on the order of 0.1–1.0 μm. MF processing is widely used in the food industry for applications such as wine, juice and beer clarification, for waste water treatment, and plasma separation from blood for therapeutic and commercial uses. In biotechnology industries, MF concerns applications such as cell recycle and harvesting, separation of recombinant proteins from cell debris, and purification of process streams.
Ultrafiltration (UF) is a water purification process in which water is forced through a semipermeable membrane. Suspended solids and high-molecular-weight solutes remain on one side of the membrane, the retentate side, while water and low-molecular-weight solutes filter through the membrane to the permeate side
Ultrafiltration (UF) is used to remove essentially all colloidal from water and some of the largest dissolved contaminants.
Ultrafiltration removes bacteria, protozoa, and some viruses from the water.
Nanofiltration (NF) is a membrane liquid-separation technology sharing many characteristics with reverse osmosis (RO). Unlike RO, which has high rejection of virtually all dissolved solutes, NF provides high rejection of multivalent ions, such as calcium, and low rejection of monovalent ions, such as chloride.
A nanofiltration filter has pore size 0.001 micro m. nanofiltration removes most organic molecules, nearly all viruses, most of the natural organic matter and a range of salts. Nanofiltration removes divalent ion, which makes water hard, so nanofiltration often used to soften hard water.
Nanofiltration, however, does not remove dissolved compounds.
