. The Black Bridge.
I fell in love with this bridge when I was a kid, when it didn’t look anything like it does now. A rusty skeleton with a rotten wooden deck underfoot. I remember wanting to cross it, and the hesitation in my mom‘s voice when she would agree. The hopscotch game I would play jumping from one solid board to the next, sure to avoid the holes from the boards that had already given way. One side of the bridge had beams extended past the trusses. I imagined that was where people use to walk when the bridge used to carry the trains. It wasn’t a surprise when the bridge was closed due to its unsafe conditions. I recall the years of sorrow in the communities voice as they hoped it wouldn’t be torn down. A remnant of the Catskill Mountain railway, its fate hung in the balance.
In 2017, through a state grant the bridge was restored.
Once again, this beautiful piece of history can safely carry pedestrians across the Catskill Creek.
I had been wanting to get some shots of this bridge for a while now. I am thankful to have finally gotten around to it. I hope you all enjoy.
