While the American military didn't officially integrate until 1948, black soldiers were able to fight in a combat role as long as they were part of a black regiment. Otherwise, if they found themselves, or enlisted in a white regiment, they could only choose from a handful of service related duties.
However, there is some evidence that at least a few regiments that were sympathetic to the abolitionist cause may have allowed their black cooks to fight in a combat role alongside their white counterparts.
This is the story of the 11th Kansas Cavalry.
