There are three possible pronunciations for the "ed" that comes at the end of a word. Which one we choose to pronounce all depends on the sound at the end of the root word.
1. If the root word ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound, we give the word an extra syllable that sounds like a quick /ɪd/ sound. You probably don't have any issues pronouncing this first one.
2. if the root word ends in a voiceless sound, we add a /t/ sound. Be careful not to add an extra syllable. We'll pronounce the previous sound right next to this /t/.
3. If the root word ends in a voiced sound, we add a /d/ sound. Again, be careful not to add an extra syllable.
EXCEPTIONS: beloved, wicked, legged, rugged, naked, ragged, and jagged. These words have the final pronunciation of the first category.
