Many students of Carnatic music find the improvisational elements (manodharma sangeetham) a little daunting. The Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi (RTP) is a completely improvisational performance that is often a highlight of a Carnatic concert. Here are excerpts from a fun group exercise by Vidya Subramanian and some of her senior students from across the globe. Watch them discuss and try out various aspects of Pallavi singing. This activity aims to de-mystify manodharma and help students at the threshold take a bold first step.
