5 Dos & Don’ts for Growing Mulberry Trees from Cuttings | Rooting Mulberry Cuttings & Pruning

I get a lot of questions about my amazing mulberry tree and how I propagate more trees from cuttings. I’ve given away many rooted cuttings to family, friends, and co-workers—they make great gifts and are incredibly easy to root, in my humble opinion. So, if you want to grow more mulberry trees or have a cutting you're hoping to root, follow along for my 5 Dos and Don’ts, plus a bonus tip at the end!

Dos & Don’ts for Rooting Mulberry Cuttings:
❌ Don’t use a cutting that’s too thick—thicker cuttings take longer to root and may struggle to establish.
✅ Do choose healthy, thin cuttings—they root faster and have a better chance of success.

❌ Don’t leave your cuttings in direct sunlight—too much sun can dry them out before they develop roots.
✅ Do place them in a shady area—this keeps moisture levels stable and prevents stress on the cutting.

❌ Don’t use dull, dirty tools—rough cuts and bacteria can slow down or prevent rooting.
✅ Do use sharp, clean tools—this ensures a smooth cut, reducing stress and the risk of disease.

❌ Don’t forget to water consistently—dry cuttings won’t root and will quickly die.
✅ Do maintain moisture—keeping the soil damp (but not soggy) encourages root growth.

❌ Don’t lose your patience! Rooting takes time, and rushing the process won’t help.
✅ Do allow enough time for roots to develop—some cuttings take weeks before showing signs of growth.

Bonus Tip (#6) – Rooting Hormones: Yes or No?
This one could be a do or a don’t, depending on your preference. Personally, I don’t use rooting hormones. While many YouTubers recommend them, I’ve had great success rooting mulberry cuttings without them. However, if you follow all my tips and still struggle to get roots, using a rooting hormone might be worth considering.
