How to install nano text editor in Linux (Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux)

Welcome to the ‘How it works’ series from servers.com, a series where we’ll be guiding you through infrastructure processes and set-ups with tutorials. In this video, we’ll show you how to install nano text editor in Linux.

If you're using Ubuntu, Mint, or any other Debian-based systems, installing nano is simple as it’s included in the default repositories.
– The first step is to open the terminal app, connect to your server, and run the following command: ‘sudo apt-get update’. This command updates the package list on your system.
– Once the update is complete, run the next command: ‘sudo apt-get install nano’. The package manager will download and install nano on your system automatically.
– Once the installation is complete, you can start using nano to edit text files.

If you're using CentOS-based systems, the first step in installing nano is also checking that the package list on your system is up to date.
– To do so, connect to your server, and run the following command in your terminal app: ‘sudo dnf update’.
– Once the update is complete, run the next command: ‘sudo yum install nano’. This will begin the install, and once it is complete, you can start using nano to edit text files.

To install nano on the AlmaLinux system:
– Firstly connect to your server and ensure your system is up to date by running the two following commands in your terminal app: ‘sudo dnf update’ and then ‘sudo dnf install epel-release’ to add a repository.
– Once the update is complete, run the following command to install nano: ‘sudo dnf install nano’.
– To check that nano has been installed, run the following command: ‘nano --version’. You will see an output with all the information about nano text editor you’ve just installed.

To install nano on the Rocky Linux system:
– Firstly connect to your server and ensure your system packages are up to date by running the two following commands in your terminal app: ‘sudo dnf check-update’ and then ‘sudo dnf install dnf-utils’.
– Once the update is complete, run the following command to install nano: ‘sudo dnf install nano’. To check that nano has been installed, run the following command: ‘nano --version’. You will see an output with all the information about nano text editor.
– Now, simply type ‘nano’ and press enter. You will see the nano interface with a ‘Welcome to nano’ message, which means you can start creating new files or edit existing ones using nano.
