Selection of a rectangular hollow structural section to support a load using the AISC Steel Construction Manual (15th edition).
1. Calculate the maximum internal bending moment in the beam due to the applied load.
2. Using Table 3-12, find any rectangular HSS that supports the bending moment.
3. Calculate the plastic section modulus required to support the load, then use Table 1-11 to find the least expensive (lightest) HSS that supports the bending moment.
