The forest is part of the Black River Riparian Forest & Wetland, a protected natural area inside Renton’s city limits. It’s home to over 50 species of birds, including a large colony of great blue herons. What makes it special: this wetland is one of the last remaining riparian forests in the Puget Sound region—part of what used to be the Black River, which until the early 20th century drained Lake Washington. The area includes trails and boardwalks that let visitors explore the wetland without disturbing the fragile soil and habitat.

This footage was filmed in the summer of 2024 by Roman Khomlyak, using an iPhone 15 Pro Max paired with a Tiffen Black Diffusion Filter 3. The setup captured the rich colors and textures of Renton’s forest in 4K HDR. The shoot was part of the ongoing “Journey with a Hiker” project, where Roman combines cinematic visuals with real moments from the trail. This video is a piece of that larger creative journey.
