The V2 growth stage is a critical time for corn, as this is the time frame for the corn plant to switch from the seminal root system to the nodal root system. Early season rain events can increase Pythium disease pressure, which can hamper root development at this growth stage. In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Kyle Poling discusses some of the visible symptoms of Pythium, including wilting leaves, a tightly wrapped whorl, or gaps in the row as a result of damping off. He also shows different plants that have been infected with Pythium, so you have some visual examples. He also discusses management of the disease, as some plants may be able to fight off the disease. Timing is very important, as plants in V1 or earlier may struggle to fight off the disease, whereas plants in V2 or later have a better chance of fighting off the disease. #Agronomy #PioneerSeeds #Corn
