Fans of Terrence Malick's Days Of Heaven and the early naturalism of Ken Loach cannot miss this poignant and moving coming-of-age period drama movie, an adaptation of an 1864 short story for children by Anthony Trollope.

Set on the rugged coast of 1880s North Cornwall, the story follows Mally Trenglos (Veronica Quilligan), a fierce and feral sixteen-year-old girl who lives in a clifftop hovel with her aging, ailing grandfather, Malachi (Donald Pleasence). Ostracized by the local villagers—whom she blames for the drowning of her parents years prior—Mally scrapes out a living by harvesting seaweed from the treacherous cove to sell as fertilizer.

Her solitary existence is challenged when Barty (David Bradley), the son of a local farmer, begins encroaching on her territory to gather seaweed himself. Their bitter rivalry eventually culminates in a near-fatal accident on the rocks, forcing a moment of reckoning that bridges the gap between their feuding families and Mally’s own isolated heart.
