Let's break Wilton's violet food coloring with dip dyeing!
The dyebath started with 11 cups of water + 2 T white vinegar. When the water started boiling, I reduced the heat and added the dye (1 cup of water + 1 tsp Wilton's violet icing color) to the dyebath. Immediately I started dip dyeing the yarn, 200 g of 75% superwash merino wool / 25% nylon fingering weight yarn http://shrsl.com/kp27 (KnitPicks Affiliate Link) into the dyebath. As soon as I start to see that the red is exhausted (i.e. I see the blue on the yarn) I add the remaining yarn and let the yarn sit in the pot for 5 minutes. Then, once the blue has exhausted, I remove the yarn and let it cool before washing it. I like to reuse these dyebaths on additional skeins of yarn. I dyed a total of 4 skeins of yarn in this video in two different batches.
There is one main differences between batch 1 and batch 2. Batch 1 had a slightly higher concentration of vinegar. This could have allowed the blue to bind a little faster, resulting in a slightly less dramatic gradient. Also, waiting even just a few seconds too long can affect how much blue is left for the final end. This sock yarn really takes up dye SUPER SUPER fast.
