Lake Como and Lake Lugano: Where Italy Meets Switzerland. In this video, we explore two pristine lakes in northern Italy and southern Switzerland.
We start in Lake Como, a serene stretch of water with the Alps as its dramatic backdrop. While the area has become synonymous with luxury, the lake is mostly lined with quaint, modest towns like Lecco. We recommend walking the scenic waterside path from Lecco and crossing the lake to visit the village of Malgrate.
Next up is Lake Lugano, which is split between Switzerland and Italy. We start on the Swiss side, in the town of Lugano, the largest city in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, then cross the border again to see the lake from Italy’s tiny town of Porto Ceresio.
We then take a quick journey back to Lake Como, to the city of Como, to see the area during the peak summer season. Our verdict? Both lakes are fantastic day or weekend trips from Milan — no matter what time of the year (though the winter offers some especially nice moments of tranquility).
