Quran 22:52 has often been clouded by controversy, especially through the story later dubbed the “Satanic Verses.” Dr. Shabir Ally explains that at the heart of the confusion is the Arabic word "umniya", which can mean either “recitation” or “hope.” Classical commentators tended to interpret it as recitation, suggesting Satan could slip words into the Prophet Muhammad’s reading, while others saw it as Satan influencing people’s understanding or dampening a prophet’s hopes. The dramatic tale that Satan placed words on the Prophet Muhammad’s tongue is historically implausible, since it would have given his opponents endless ammunition, yet no such record exists. A more convincing interpretation is that Satan tried to sow doubt or despair, while God erased such influences, safeguarded His revelation, and continually strengthened the Prophet until his message triumphed.
