Cymbidium Orchids will eventually need dividing and repotting. We show you how to divide them and re pot them to make more plants, better flowers and promote new strong growth.
The traditional time to divide Cyms is in spring after flowering, some growers prefer late summer. As long as its not to cold, the time is not that crucial.
It is best to divide the larger clumps into smaller clumps of 3 - 4 bulbs. The older bulbs (back bulbs) can be removed or left.
Smaller divisions of 1 - 2 bulbs may not flower the first year after division.
Trim of any dead or damaged roots.
Potting mixes vary greatly, as long as you use a good proportion of orchid bark mix and the drainage is good you will have few problems.
You can repot in a specialist cymbidium orchid mix or make your own try a 50 % pine bark and 50 % coir peat mix. The potting mix that is best will depend on your climate and watering regime. Use a pot that will provide a restricted root run, cymbidiums grow better with a confined root system.
Do not fertilise for about 2 months after dividing.
