Rumi is well known for the Sufi brotherhood he founded, with its distinctive whirling and circular dance known as raj, practiced by the dervishes. The seven-part Sema ceremony represents the mystical journey of the individual on his ascent through mind and love to union with the divine. Reflecting the revolving nature of existence and all living beings, the Sufi dervish turns to truth, grows through love, abandons the ego, and embraces perfection. He then returns from this spiritual journey as one who has attained perfection to be of love and serve all creation. Dressed in long white robes (the covering of the ego) and wearing tall, conical hats (the tombstone of the ego), the dervish dances for hours. With his arms raised high, the right hand raised upward to receive blessings and energy from heaven, the left hand turned downward to bestow these blessings on the earth, and his body turning from right to left, the dervish turns around his heart and embraces all creation with love.
