This was the opening night of Wolfgang Wagner's new Tristan production, presenting for the first time Birgit Nilsson and Wolfgang Windgassen in their roles in Bayreuth, after singing them in Florence a few months prior. Sadly no direct mater tape copy from the Bayerische Rundfunk is available, but fortunately someone recorded live off the air from the BBC relay in rather decent quality and judging by the background hums I seem to have received a first generation copy as source material.
Unfortunately the tape speed was inconsistent to the extreme: pitch varied by almost a semitone and constantly changed. Fortunately the clear 50 Hz hum helped visualising pitch drift with greatest precision. Still, I needed to measure pitch at more than 50 points for each act. This performance is now for the first time available perfectly and consitently pitched.
A second Tristan broadcast from this season exists in better quality (with Hans Hotter replacing Gustav Neidlinger).
