A look at rail activity on New Zealand Rail in the Hawkes Bay area (Napier and Hastings)of the North Island in November, 1994. Included are through freights, local switching and the Bay Express, which has since been discontinued. In downtown Hastings, the railway passes through the middle of an ornamental fountain right next to the town clock tower. Also featured is a chase of a freight between Napier and Wairoa on the now closed Gisborne line. This train has old two axle cars spaced as idlers between modern covered hoppers to spread the axle load on several of the line's bridges that had restricted loading. Class DX GE's and Class DC EMD's are featured, along with Class DSG shunters built in Japan
