BOSNIA: HEAVY FIGHTING CONTINUES NEAR TUZLA UPDATE

Heavy fighting between Bosnian Government forces and Bosnian Serbs continues near Tuzla in northeastern Bosnia.

According to a U-N spokesman in Sarajevo the heaviest battle was in the northeast near the Majevica hills, apparently tied to a Serb counter-offensive.

Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic warned on Tuesday that his army would launch such a counter-offensive which he claimed would finally defeat Bosnian government forces.

But peace looks no closer as both sides engage in a succession of offensives and counter-offensives.

Bosnian government forces have made gains in recent weeks in the northeast near Tuzla, one of a series of offensives on several strategic mountain ranges.

The fighting has been concentrated in the area around the strategic communications tower on Stolice, one of the highest peaks in the mountain range.

But recent shelling of the government held town of Tuzla seems to confirm the Bosnian Serb leader's claim that a counter-offensive would soon be underway.

An estimated 200-thousand people are believed to have been killed or gone missing since the war began three years ago this month.

A ceasefire, which expires at the end of the month, has done little to halt the fighting.
