Catching copper nose bluegill from the bank during bedding season—especially in high winds—can still be productive if you adapt your tactics. Here are some tips to help you succeed using crickets and worms:
1. Tackle Setup
Rod/Reel: Use a light spinning setup (4-10 lb. line) for sensitivity. Rod 6 - 10ft long Reel small and Light
Float Rig: A slip bobber or fixed float setup is ideal. Use a small split shot 6–12 inches above a size 2– 6 hook.
Hook: Use a thin wire hook to keep the bait lively (especially for crickets).
2. Bait Presentation
Crickets: Hook them under the collar (just behind the head) to keep them active.
Worms: Thread a small piece onto the hook so it dangles enticingly.
3. Targeting Beds in High Wind
Find Protected Pockets: Look for coves, windbreaks, or areas with vegetation that can block the wind.
Use the Wind to Your Advantage: If casting downwind, you can reach farther beds. Use a slightly larger float or add weight for better control.
Cast Parallel to the Shore: Beds are often in 1–4 feet of water near the bank. Casting parallel allows you to cover more area along the bedding zone.
5. Best Times
Early morning and late afternoon are prime times, but bedding bluegills can bite all day.
During a full or new moon, bedding activity is often at its peak.
