Hydration Pack vs. Hip Pack vs. Frame Strap

No matter the ride, having your own riding essentials is, well, essential. Whether you use a hip pack, hydration pack, or frame strap, it’s a good idea to carry a few essential MTB accessories regardless of how long you are out on the trail. Here at WC, we do all kinds of riding from all-day XC epics to endless bike park laps, so we have accumulated a lot of experience on the topic of riding essentials between all of Zack’s flat tires and Jared’s broken chains. Some of the common items we like to carry on our mountain bikes include a water bottle, multitool with a chain breaker, tube, master link, tire plugs, frame pump/CO2, and some tire levers. These items are typically agreed upon among riders here at the shop as your most basic riding essentials to prevent getting stranded. The arguments usually start with the method someone decides to carry everything on their rides. The double-edged sword being there are many ways to carry the essentials these days. Our usual suspects are either a KETL bib with pockets to stash stuff in, a Backcountry Research WC frame strap, an EVOC hip pack, or a full-on Osprey hydration pack, depending on how long we plan on riding, where the ride is, and sometimes even the conditions.
