Two of Vital Ground's recent conservation projects protect crucial wildlife habitat in the Yaak Valley of northwestern Montana. With development pressures high across the region, the Broadie Habitat Preserve and Fowler Creek projects conserve more than 500 acres of key habitat in the valley bottom that helps connect public land strongholds in the surrounding mountains. Part of the larger Cabinet-Yaak Ecosystem, the Yaak is home to one of the Lower 48's smallest grizzly bear populations at an estimated 25-30 animals. Improving connectivity between these bears and neighboring populations is crucial to the species' long-term recovery.
