I Was Out of Options… But It Finally Boots! Installing IRIX 6.5 on the SGI Indy
After trying every old hard drive, every adapter, and running out of ideas, I was ready to give up on bringing my SGI Indy workstation back to life. But then, when it seemed like all hope was gone, something finally worked!
In this video, I install a new hard drive and attempt to load IRIX 6.5, the classic UNIX operating system that made Silicon Graphics famous in the 1990s. This SGI Indy has been sitting in storage since around the year 2000 — untouched for more than 25 years — and after weeks of troubleshooting, adapter testing, and failed boots, it finally powers up and begins running IRIX once again.
What makes this one special is that the solution wasn’t what anyone expected. With no working 50-pin SCSI drives left, I used an adapter and a 32GB drive that technically shouldn’t have worked… but it did!
If you’re into retro computing, vintage workstations, or just love seeing old tech revived, this episode is the satisfying payoff to the SGI Indy series so far. Watch as we go from “out of options” to a fully booting IRIX 6.5 system — a true comeback after 25 years of silence.
