Why do fiber splicing for best connection on network cabling - More Online - https://www.bridgecable.com/fiber-opt...
Mike reviews why we train our new hires to do fiber splicing. In the Philadelphia and New Jersey area we do repair and new installs. Typically we bail out alot of smaller companies that need our service. Splicing and training is expensive but most big companies like us provide this service.

Good question! In network cabling, especially when it comes to **fiber optic cables**, "splicing" means **joining two fiber optic cables together**. It's usually done for two main reasons: either to repair a broken cable or to extend the cable run.
Splicing is better than just using connectors in some cases because:
Lower signal loss (attenuation): A properly spliced fiber connection can have much less signal loss compared to a standard connector-based link.
Stronger connection: A fusion splice (the most common high-end method) literally melts the fibers together, making a very strong, durable joint.
More protection against dust and moisture: Splices are usually sealed better than connectors, which can be important for outdoor or underground installations.
Permanent: Splices are designed to be a long-term, low-maintenance solution, unlike connectors that might need cleaning or replacing.
There are mainly two types of splicing:
1. Fusion splicing – melts fibers together with an electric arc (very precise, very low loss).
2. Mechanical splicing – aligns the fibers carefully and holds them in place with a special gel or mechanical sleeve (faster but a little higher loss).
When is splicing better?
When you want *very low signal loss* (e.g., long-distance or high-speed networks like FTTH or data centers).
When you need to *repair* broken fiber.
When you're dealing with *outdoor or underground cables* that have to stay tough and weatherproof.
When you need a *permanent solution* instead of easy-to-disconnect setups.
