Charismatic, the onetime claiming horse who stunned the racing world two weeks ago when he won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 31-1, pulled an even more unlikely trick today when he won the Preakness at 8-1 and advanced to the brink of the Triple Crown.
He was chased home again by Menifee, who lost the Derby by the length of his neck and lost the Preakness by a length and a half. And so, for the third straight year, a colt won both the Derby and the Preakness and needed only to win the Belmont Stakes to achieve a feat that only 11 horses have accomplished, none since Affirmed 21 years ago.
''We'll go to the Belmont full of optimism,'' said D. Wayne Lukas, who trains Charismatic for Bob and Beverly Lewis of Los Angeles. ''I told Bob and Beverly before the Kentucky Derby: 'I don't know about the first two. But we'll look good in the Belmont.' I just like his style.''
