Coffee first, then everything else

No, I am not putting my coffee down to work cattle. Gentling a heifer takes time and patients.

Aeden (pronounced Eden) is a Dexter heifer, 15 months old. Heifers are young ones who have not reared a calf. She has not been handled, so she needs some work. Dexters tend to have a demeanor similar to Jersey cows.

Dexters are smaller than standard cattle, but they carry the A2/A2 milk protein. She is polled, so she will not grow horns. Aeden is with a mini bull now and will remain with him for 2 months to ensure she is bred. She should calve end of May or beginning of June 2026.

We are excited to bring her to the homestead at the end of October. For now, I am working with her to get her gentled and ready for haltering, leading, and willing to be handled all over. Preparation for being a family milk cow starts at a young age and makes for a better, calmer, easier to handle cow once she is in milk.
