𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗔𝗗! 😥 Gravesite of escaped slave | Bradford | Leeds

** 𝗪𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲 **

This story was pretty difficult to cover due to vague information from very few sources, hence the year of birth on ancestry is 1840 (NOT 1848)!

Abraham Johnson. He was born in Zanzibar around 1840.

He was enslaved as a teenager and his enslavement took him to China, Japan and India. He escaped slavery in South-East Asia before working as a crew member on board a ship that brought him to Liverpool .

Abraham Johnson was living in Leeds from around 1864 until 1868 when he returned to sea as a crew member on a ship travelling from Liverpool across the Indian Ocean and back . From 1881 he lived in a lodging house on Longlands Street in Bradford with his wife and daughter. He became a street vendor selling pamphlets and newspapers.

By 1888, when he was painted by John Sowden, he was using a cane perhaps due to injuries caused in a ship wreck .

He died in Armley jail in Leeds in 1910 and was buried at Killingbeck cemetery in Leeds. Sources: Street Characters of a Victorian City - Gary Firth (1993).
