Small cell foundation from the time they started making it had nothing at all to do with mites. It had everything to do with the size of the bee, the numbers of bees in a beehive, the number of cells on a frame, the number of frames in a hive, the strength of the colony, bees passing through a queen excluder and the number of bees to patrol The Hive against wax moths.
Small cell foundation was never intended to have anything to do with varroa mites.
People came up with a theory and the theory did not manifest into fact. So when beekeepers tried the product it was a total failure.
it wasn't a failure because of small cell not improving hive numbers, but it was a failure because it did nothing to control varroa mites. as it was never intended to to begin with.
So one of the most valuable beekeepers tools to ever exist has been thrown in the garbage because of pure misrepresentation, and the fact that the FDA didn't like it.
I'm hoping that the FDA has a different opinion on it now. Times change, tests modernize and identification of bees is much easier now.
