The Northern Explorer is one of KiwiRail's three long-distance tourist trains, running three times a week in each direction between Auckland and Wellington over the full length of the North Island Main Trunk. This line runs through all sorts of picturesque scenery, including the coastal section south of Paekakariki, the mighty Central Plateau and - of course - the famous Raurimu Spiral.
Motive power is provided by 'DFB' class diesel locomotives, and the passengers ride in the purpose-built 'AK' and 'AKC' class coaches (whose most notable feature is probably the panoramic windows). The AKs and AKCs are supplemented by AKV observation/generator, AKS luggage and AKF kitchen coaches, which were rebuilt from existing vehicles.
On Saturday the 23rd of November, we chased DFB 7049 on her southbound run between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui. The latter is a scheduled stop and the home of Forgotten World Adventures; the company running modified golf-carts on the old Stratford to Okahukura line.
