Classic clinical microbiology techniques such as culture and phenotypic analysis form the major chunk of microbial identification, especially so for the bacterial isolates.
The most sophisticated microbial laboratories still use the microbial culture techniques and need to isolate the bacteria and biochemically identify the isolate.
